St Brigid’s Preschool & Long Day Care, nestled in the heart of Coogee, marked a momentous occasion with its Blessing Ceremony on 28 February 2024.
Presided over by the venerable Most Rev Daniel Meagher DD, Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, and Parish Priest Rev Thoi Tran, the ceremony was a vibrant union of faith, education, and community spirit. The event celebrated not only the blessings of the new learning spaces but also the deep cultural and historical connections to the land.
Reflecting on the occasion, Franceyn O’Connor, SCECS Chief Executive Officer, shared: "Inspired by the compassionate spirit of St Brigid, our centre aspires to create a nurturing environment where every child is valued and supported. Just as St Brigid’s cloak expanded to provide shelter for her monastery, our centre opens its doors to children from all walks of life, offering them a place to learn, grow, and thrive in a faith-filled community."
The ceremony also acknowledged the rich history of Coogee, derived from the Aboriginal word "koojah," meaning a "bad smell" or "stinking place," referencing the seaweed that once washed ashore. Ms O’Connor paid respect to the Bidjigal and Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the land: "I would like to acknowledge the Bidjigal and Gadigal people, who lived and taught their children here for thousands of years. Their heritage enriches this land, and we honour their legacy and wisdom as we teach the children of today, who will become the Elders of the future."
The children of St Brigid’s were at the heart of the celebration, eagerly showcasing their favourite learning experiences and spaces. Their pride and enthusiasm reflected the centre’s commitment to providing a nurturing and stimulating educational environment.
In his opening prayer, Bishop Meagher invoked blessings for the educators and children, stating: "May these learning spaces be sanctuaries of wisdom and faith, where children discover the truths of the Gospel and are inspired to live lives of integrity and compassion."
